About Matthew

  • Biography

Matthew specialises in dispute resolution within the built environment, focusing on professional risks, contentious construction and policy advice for the insurance industry.

He has over 13 years’ experience across the full range of construction related activities (from minor domestic projects to large scale infrastructure, public utilities and power works). He has worked with the majority of major Insurers, and their insureds, and undertook a 6 month secondment within a claims team principally handing CAR claims.

Matthew trained in the London Market, is dual qualified and has been practicing in Scotland since 2015. He practices across both jurisdictions and applies his knowledge of his clients’ commercial aims and expectations to the nuances of both systems.

    Relevant experience includes advising:

    • Major engineering companies on complex, technical, multi-party and multi-million pound disputes arising from the construction of public utilities, including hospitals, schools, roads, flood defences and the like.
    • Main contractors, sub-contractors and project managers on claims arising from cladding and fire safety.
    • Specialist suppliers for example on the technical specifications of concrete utilised in wind-farm construction.
    • Insurers on the successful declinature of a £6m property damage claim on the basis of the policyholder’s failure to comply with its duty of fair presentation.

Professional memberships: Matthew is a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute.
