About Catrin

Bio
  • Biography

Catrin Davies specialises in Professional Indemnity and Regulatory work predominantly in respect of solicitors.

She has over 19 years’ experience advising clients across a range of professions but has particular expertise in defending claims against solicitors and acting and supporting them with regulatory investigations by the SRA and those that are referred to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.   Catrin has a national reputation in respect of her work and acts for most of the SRA participating Insurers and defends a variety of types of claims which arise, many of which are worth multi million pounds and give rise to complex liability issues.  She and the team has particular experience of multi-party litigation.

Catrin puts her clients at the heart of everything that she does.  She has been described as "dedicated and sensitive" in previous directories and believes that these are important qualities when advising her professional clients particularly in the context of professional disciplinary investigations and proceedings.  She has particular interest in sexual misconduct cases and the new guidance issued by the SRA in respect of toxic workplaces.

Catrin is responsible for DAC Beachcroft's Risks in Brief Solicitors Newsletter which is sent quarterly to Insured clients.  She participates in podcasts, webinars, blogs, alerts and articles on issues relevant to Insurers and their customers and regularly supports her solicitor clients by delivering in-house risk training.

    Relevant experience includes advising:

    • Insurers and their Insured solicitors in respect of multi million pound claims involving Buyer Funded Developments.
    • Insurers and Insured under a D&O policy in respect of regulatory action by the SRA and referral to the SDT involving a number of directors at an Insured law firm which involved allegations of dishonesty and lack of integrity.  The SRA were unsuccessful at the Tribunal hearing and Catrin's clients succeeded in defending the regulatory action. See here and here.
    • Insurers and an Insured partner in respect of a regulatory investigation by the SRA referred to the SDT in respect of sexual misconduct whereby the SRA were looking for a six month suspension.  The partner was fined and meant that the partner was able to continue with their practice.
    • Insurers and Insureds on a professional negligence claim which was taken to the Court of Appeal and set new guidance on the identification of the date of damage for the purposes of the Limitation Act 1980 in the context of claims against litigation solicitors (Holt v Holley & Steer [2020] EWCA Civ 851).  She was successful in the Court of Appeal and successfully defended an appeal to the Supreme Court also and recovered costs for her Insurer client.
    • Insurers and a firm of genealogists in respect of a negligence claim relating to items within an estate involving Chinese antiques allegedly worth in excess of £4,000,000.
    • Insurers and an Insured firm acting as Trustee in respect of funeral plans in respect of claims valued at £28,000,000.
