Julian Teoh

Julian specialises in insurance and reinsurance disputes, especially in high-value complex matters with a cross-border element.

He has over 16 years’ experience in Sydney and Singapore, advising re/insurer clients on risks across a range of sectors including hospitality, energy, manufacturing, resources, heavy industrial and logistics.

He has a strong background in accounting and industry, and has also completed a secondment with Australia's largest general insurer.

Relevant experience includes:

  • Advising excess layer insurers of an insured industrial gas contactor in respect of claims arising from a catastrophic fire at a hi-tech research facility in Singapore.
  • Advising re/insurers on coverage in respect of multiple breakdowns at a Vietnamese combined cycle power plant.
  • Advising and acting for insured turbine manufacturers in an arbitration brought in respect of claims arising from a petrochemical refinery breakdown in Johor, Malaysia.
  • Advising and acting for insured crane manufacturers in an arbitration arising from a crane collapse at an offshore exploration platform, and supervising recovery proceedings in the French courts.
  • Advising and acting for a blockchain technology start-up in recovering its losses against a former director.
  • Advising insurers on coverage in respect of claims brought by a technology company against its former directors arising from a series of failed overseas investments.

Julian is recognised as a leading practitioner in Euromoney's Legal Experts Guide to Insurance and Reinsurance in Singapore, and in the Gracechurch Asia-Pacific Insurance Law Report, earning praise for his "very good technical skills" and "familiarity with the local market, and strong network of contacts".
