  • Biography

    Pete has over 14 years’ experience advising clients across a range of sectors, including the financial services and retail sectors. His key clients include a US headquartered global insurance company.

    Pete advises on all aspects of data protection and privacy law, including data governance frameworks, direct marketing, international data transfers, complex data sharing arrangements, privacy risk assessments, data breaches, data subject complaints and rights requests, and regulatory investigations.

    Relevant experience includes advising:

    • a global insurer and an international payments company on two separate large end-to-end Schrems II / SCC remediation engagements. Previously, he led a GDPR remediation / readiness engagement for the same global insurer. Among other things, these engagements involved remediating the data transfer terms for over 600 counterparties.
    • a professional services firm on its approach to undertaking data protection impact assessments and transfer impact assessments. As part of the engagement, Pete advised the client on the steps it could take to streamline and improve its assessments. The engagement also involved digitising both assessments.
    • a client on a high-profile personal data breach; the breach was picked up by and reported in the media, including by the BBC. Pete also advised on the notification to the ICO and subsequent ICO investigation, as well as the remediation activities.
    • a UK high street retailer on a complex data sharing agreement between the retailer, a US bank, and a US IT service provider in respect of a major financial product.

    Pete is ranked by Chambers & Partners as an Up and Coming lawyer. A client testimonial states: "He's intellectually fantastic, sensible and practical in his application of the law.".

    In addition, Pete teaches PDP's Breach Management course and is a member of the PDP Examination Board for the Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection.

    Pete is co-author of the e-privacy chapter in the following practitioner handbook: Data Protection - A Practical Guide to UK Law (6th Edition (2020), Oxford University Press).
