Day in the life of a Solicitor apprentice
Morning - I usually get into the office around 8:30. I start by checking any new emails and updating my to‑do list for the day. I also look at our shared team calendar to see what everyone has on - this helps me plan ahead and know when my supervisors are available if I need something reviewed or want to check in. On Fridays, we have a 9:30 team meeting with both the Bristol and London insolvency teams. It’s a great chance to share updates from the week and stay connected as a wider group.
Midday - My work varies depending on which team I’m supporting. In the insolvency team, this might include hearing preparation (such as putting together hearing bundles, preparing statements of costs or drafting instructions to counsel), as well as liaising with clients, respondents, the court or counsel. At this stage of my career, I’m not in many client meetings, but I’ve started attending external events, like an IWIRC session where I met a client - a really helpful experience for building confidence.
When I support the company secretarial team, my work can involve Companies House filings, updating company registers or drafting board minutes. I also regularly liaise with our company secretarial clients. Occasionally, I help the banking or corporate teams too, which has given me a useful understanding of the work they do and helped broaden my experience across different practice areas.
Lunch - I usually have lunch with colleagues from my team or neighbouring teams, which is a nice break and a good way to get to know people better. Sometimes I’ll also join an external contact for lunch. These conversations are a great way to build professional relationships in a more informal setting, and I’ll often follow up by connecting with them on LinkedIn.
Afternoon - I often use the afternoon for longer or more focused tasks, once I’ve cleared any urgent items from the morning. I tend to log off around 5ish and commute home, depending on what the day brings, keeping a good balance while making sure everything that needs attention is wrapped up.
