The journey towards automated vehicle (AV) deployment is accelerating, bringing with it important questions around data, technology, policy, security and trust. As the industry moves from concept to reality, collaboration and open debate have never been more important.
Over the past two months, DAC Beachcroft CSG's Strategic Advisory has brought together leading voices from across the sector through its Reading the Road thought leadership programme. Through a series of expert podcasts and a forthcoming digital magazine, industry specialists have explored some of the most critical issues shaping the future of AV deployment, from artificial intelligence and cyber-security to energy, fraud, policy development, and the capture and sharing of data.
Watch the interviews below. New episodes released every Tuesday from 15 September.
Artificial Intelligence - Alex Glassbrook and Tom Barnes - Part 1
Peter Allchorne, Tom Barnes and Alex Glassbrook explore the role of artificial intelligence at the heart of automated vehicle technology. The discussion examines how AI enables automated driving systems, the opportunities it presents for safety and efficiency, and the legal and practical challenges that accompany its deployment on UK roads.
Artificial Intelligence - Alex Glassbrook and Tom Barnes - Part 2
Building on the previous discussion, Peter Allchorne, Tom Barnes and Alex Glassbrook consider the wider implications of AI in the automated vehicle ecosystem, including accountability, transparency, trust, decision-making and the evolving regulatory landscape. The episode explores how industry, government and insurers can work together to support the safe adoption of AI-driven mobility.
Energy Use - Sean McGahan and David Marston-Jones
Peter Allchorne is joined by Sean McGahan and David Marston-Jones to explore the energy, infrastructure and sustainability challenges that sit behind automated vehicle deployment. From data centres and charging networks to connectivity, repairability and the UK's energy capacity, the discussion examines the critical systems that will support the next generation of mobility and considers what they mean for insurers, businesses and society.
Cyber-Security - David Williams and Justin Tivey
David Williams and Justin Tivey discuss the growing cyber-security and data protection risks associated with automated vehicles. As vehicles become increasingly connected and generate significant volumes of personal data, the conversation explores data breaches, software vulnerabilities, liability, regulatory compliance and the challenges of protecting both vehicles and the information they collect.
Fraud - Rob Fallows and Claire Newcombe
Rob Fallows and Claire Newcombe explore how automated vehicles could reshape the fraud landscape. The episode looks at the role of data in fraud detection, emerging risks created by automation and connected technologies, and how insurers may need to adapt their investigation and claims strategies in response to increasingly complex vehicles and evolving fraud typologies.
Coverage - Jonathan Hopkins, Lucy McCormick, and Chris Moore
Jonathan Hopkins, Lucy McCormick and Chris Moore examine how insurance products must evolve to meet the realities of automated vehicles. Covering policy wordings, liability, product risk, data-driven underwriting and the relationship between manufacturers, insurers and technology providers, the discussion considers how insurance frameworks can support innovation while maintaining consumer protection.
Capturing and Sharing Data - Tom Leggett, Fraser Lyall, and Alina Liebholz - Part 1
Featuring experts from the ABI, MIB and Thatcham Research, this episode examines the role of data in automated vehicle claims and compensation. The panel discusses why accessible, standardised and transparent data sharing will be essential for insurers, regulators and consumers, while also exploring how data can help build trust in emerging automated vehicle technologies.
Capturing and Sharing Data - Tom Leggett, Fraser Lyall, and Alina Liebholz - Part 2
Launching 27 October
The discussion continues with a focus on the practical and regulatory challenges that remain before automated vehicles can be deployed at scale. Topics include public understanding, remote operation, liability frameworks, data access and the steps required to create a trusted and consistent approach to automated vehicle regulation in the UK and beyond.
