Biography
Matthew leads the firm's construction, engineering, and onshore energy offering and has wide-ranging experience supporting (re)insurers in relation to issues arising under property damage, business interruption, construction/erection all risks (CAR/EAR), advance loss of profits, delay in start-up and CGL (public, products, and pollution) covers, as well as bespoke wordings.
Matthew's practice includes handling large and complex claims that span the globe, and he has represented (re)insurers in relation to losses arising across the US and Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. He also has extensive experience of domestic and international alternative dispute resolution, litigation, and arbitration (including ICC, LCIA and ARIAS).
Matthew also advises on the drafting of a broad range of policy wordings and related documents and regularly lectures/hosts roundtables with insurers and other stakeholders on pertinent issues affecting, or predicted to affect, the industry.

- Advising CAR insurers in relation to a £200m Commercial Court claim concerning water ingress into the largest timber cassette roof in Europe
- Advising CAR insurers in the defence of a £50m+ LCIA arbitration following the failure of an underground basement slab at a mixed-use development in London
- Advising CAR reinsurers in relation to a US$150m+ claim following significant ground settlement issues arising during the construction of an airport in the Middle East
- Advising excess of loss liability reinsurers in relation to multiple claims arising from gas exploration drilling operations in Europe
- Advising EAR reinsurers in relation to a tunnel collapse during the construction of a headrace tunnel at a hydroelectric plant
- Advising EAR reinsurers in relation to multiple claims arising during the expansion of an oil refinery in Asia
- Advising CAR insurers in relation to multiple landslide losses which occurred during the construction of a large infrastructure project in Europe, including recovery proceedings (ICC arbitration) against the design engineers
- Acting for liability insurers in the defence of a £25m+ claim for property damage following a tunnel fire
- Advising CAR insurers in relation to a large DSU loss arising from damage to a biomass plant
- Advised extensively in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, including acting for insurers in the reported cases of Pizza Express Group Limited and others v Liberty Mutual Insurance Europe SE and others [2023] EWHC 1269 and Various Eateries Trading Limited v Allianz Insurance plc at both first instance and on appeal [2022] EWHC 2549; [2024] EWCA Civ 10
