Biografía
Michael is a Partner in DAC Beachcroft’s Dubai office. He advises policyholders, insurers and reinsurers on a broad spectrum of complex insurance and reinsurance disputes across multiple sectors. He has been instructed on some of the region's most significant property, casualty and healthcare claims.
Michael has extensive experience appearing before the principal common and civil law courts across the Middle East, as well as before the High Court in London. He also regularly advises clients in arbitration, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
He is regularly instructed on complex, cross-border disputes arising from some of the Middle East's largest property losses and complex casualty and healthcare claims.
His practice spans the full spectrum of insurance and reinsurance disputes, with particular expertise in property, casualty (including commercial general liability, employers' liability, public and product liability and environmental liability), professional indemnity, healthcare and medical malpractice and subrogated recoveries.
Featured experience:
- Advising insurers and reinsurers on the UAE’s ‘Black Swan’ floods in April 2024, involving property damage and business interruption claims with an aggregate value exceeding AED 2 billion.
- Managing a portfolio of more than 50 litigated COVID-19 property damage and business interruption claims, before the DIFC Courts, UAE onshore courts and arbitral tribunals.
- Advising on a series of the Middle East’s largest fire losses, including the AED 1.5 billion claim arising from the Address Downtown Dubai hotel fire.
- Defending an international hotel group and its insurers in relation to a USD 10 million claim pursued simultaneously in the UAE and the United States following a fatality.
- Representing hospitals, healthcare providers and medical malpractice insurers in high-value negligence claims, regulatory investigations and disciplinary proceedings across the UAE and wider GCC.
- Successfully defending a major shopping mall operator and its liability insurers in multiple civil and criminal proceedings following a significant mall fire in the UAE.
- Advising reinsurers on a USD 350 million litigated subrogated recovery arising from a major hotel cladding fire in Dubai.
- Advising reinsurers on a USD 80 million subrogated recovery following damage to a methanol plant in Oman.
