Catriona McCorry

Catriona specialises in Medical Malpractice, Professional Risk and casualty claims.

She has over 10 years’ experience advising clients across a range of sectors including medical malpractice, professional risk, personal injury and dispute resolution. Her key clients include several London market insurers underwriting clinical risk; and Willis Towers Watson for whom she handles a caseload of claims against local solicitors under the Law Society’s Master Policy in Northern Ireland.

Catriona, initially specialised in casualty claims, primarily complex long tail industrial disease claims, whilst gathering increasing experience in the field of clinical risk. In recent years she has assisted a number of healthcare insurer clients in the defence of medical negligence claims against doctors, physiotherapists and private clinics. In addition, she has provided legal advice to medical professionals in relation to formal inquiries and coroner’s inquests and has conducted risk reviews of clinical policies and procedures to assist insurer clients in renewals.

Relevant experience includes advising:

• Willis Towers Watson in the early engagement and resolution of a solicitor’s professional indemnity claim involving a negligently drafted will and the impact and application of the Inheritance (Provision for Family & Dependents) (NI) Order 1979. The claim was resolved at an early stage without recourse to litigation.
• RSA in the vigorous defence of a Professional indemnity claim against an insolvency practitioner in respect of alleged negligent advice given in relation to the collapse and subsequent liquidation of a company. The claim was withdrawn with the result that the client had no claimant damages or costs to pay. The insured did not suffer an increase in premiums and her good reputation was left fully intact.
• Vericlaim in the defence of a potentially high value large loss personal injury claim which raised considerable credibility concerns on the part of the claimant. Through robust tactics which included taking proactive steps to get the claimant’s legal aid certificate revoked and engaging surveillance experts, this claim was withdrawn with claimant receiving nil damages and client and insured bearing no claimant costs.

In addition, Catriona is a member of the Northern Ireland Medico Legal Society and regularly participates and runs claims and quantum workshops for the Insurance Institute Northern Ireland.

Catriona has been recognised by Legal 500 as a ‘rising star’ in the area of personal injury and clinical negligence.
