Caroline Calder's Expertise

Caroline Calder

Caroline specialises in Clinical Risk/Medical Malpractice. Caroline joined DAC Beachcroft in February 2009, previously acting on behalf of Claimants within the clinical negligence and personal injury field since 2003. Caroline is a Senior Associate in the Newcastle Office with 14 years post qualification experience.

She mainly deals with clinical negligence claims on behalf of NHS Resolution (formerly the NHS Litigation Authority) for Trusts and Health Authorities across the North East as well as having experience in advising private Hospital providers and Medical Malpractise Insurers. Caroline is the first port of call for two of the largest North East Trust clients providing ad hoc advice, providing quarterly MI information and attending quarterly client relation meetings.

Relevant experience includes:

  • Leading the NHS R Limited Instruction scheme in Newcastle as well supervising and providing training on the NHS R Inquest scheme and liaison with the Healthcare Regulatory team in Newcastle.
  • Birth injury claims, orthopaedic, oncology and obstetric claims. Caroline also leads the Early Notification Scheme in the Newcastle office involving work on individual cases as well as providing training to local trusts on maternity and ENS reportable patient incidents.

Caroline originally developed the concept and initiated the Clinical Risk cluster added value product for trusts in Newcastle, “lessons learnt” when a local trust requested feedback on cases and how they could ensure individual clinicians appreciated the impact of claims and to drive patient safety improvements. This was initially rolled out to Newcastle’s regional Trusts and was then adopted by other offices. The concept and service has now grown and expanded into a national service we offer all our Trust clients.

She also authors training manuals for new fee earners within the Newcastle team, training on client protocols and key drivers to work towards when running files and reporting.

In addition to the above, Caroline is a member of the Law Society and North east Medico Legal Society.
