Ireland - Industrial Relations

Industrial relations disputes are on the rise in Ireland. Clients need to understand how to navigate the Irish system from both a cultural and legal perspective.

We advise employers as they consult with staff and unions, informed by legal, business and cultural issues. We are experienced in interpreting sectoral and employer specific collective agreements, and of advising employers in collective issues in various fora. While we are experienced in contentious IR issues, we know the value of resolving issues through consultation.

We have considerable industrial relations experience for example in remuneration disputes and organisational change. This encompasses pickets, lock ins and other forms of industrial action. Our lawyers have advised on all aspects of industrial relations, to include:

  • Strikes;
  • Obtaining a landmark and high profile permanent injunction regarding industrial action, including illegal occupation of premises, picketing and strike action;
  • Severance payments including at the former Labour Relations Commission;
  • Premises closures and collective redundancies;
  • Representation at the Labour Court in relation to the interpretation of collective agreements.
