Part one: an introduction to the strategic issues

Part two: commissioning integration

It is almost two years since the publication of the NHS Five Year Forward View (5YFV), which has the aim of transforming health and social care in England, creating a truly integrated wellbeing service.

Part one sees Anne Crofts, partner and head of commercial health, examine exactly what the strategic issues are around delivering this vision.

The Government has stated that it wants to see innovation and that there is no single definition for integrated care. So it is up to local stakeholders to decide on the best fit. Expectations are high.

In part two Anne Crofts discusses how to commission integration successfully.

Part three: contracting and corporate structures

Part four: procurement and competition

Integrating health and social care is like assembling a giant set of three dimensional jigsaws across the country. Each local health and social care economy will have its own specific forms and functions within it, but each will need to come together to deliver the aims of the NHS Five Year Forward View (5YFV).

Hamza Drabu, partner, discusses the best ways to devise successful contracting and corporate structures in order to successfully deliver integrated health services.

Providers and commissioners are faced with putting in place whole new models of care within very short time-scales. Commissioners have to comply with the NHS (Procurement, Patient Choice and Competition) (No. 2) Regulations 2013 (the “NHS Regulations”), which include a range of objectives that must be met regardless of value.

Mary Mundy, associate, highlights the procurement and competition pitfalls, and how best to carry out a procurement or competitive process.

Part five: the leadership view

Part six: recommendations

We asked five leaders from across the health and social care landscape to give us their views on the best way to deliver the NHS Five Year Forward View, including Chris Hopson (NHS Providers), Mike Farrar (former Chief Executive of NHS Confederation) and David Hare (Chief Executive of NHS Partners Network - to name a few.

Read our summary of recommendations around how to take the next steps on the road to realising the aims of the NHS Five Year Forward View.
