Every Christmas we organise a network-wide campaign of volunteering for homeless people. We've put together this video to show our colleagues helping out in their local communities:
Our Belfast office organised volunteering at Christmas time to help homeless people through Extern and Crisis Accommodation for Women. Christmas trees and decorations were put up for the homeless people accessing these centres for help and support. This helps provide festive cheer for those who can find Christmas a particularly difficult time of year.
Through our Women+ Network, employees in Birmingham are supporting Smart Works, a charity which supports women trying to get back into work. Our employees organised collections of ‘gently worn’ work clothing, to help Smart Works provide outfits for interview and further outfits to build ‘work wardrobes’.
We are partnering with Ark Victoria Academy in Small Heath, to provide Maths and English tutoring to primary school pupils through the charity Action Tutoring. This programme has a significant impact on the children's learning; research carried out by the Education Endowment Foundation showed that pupils make up to five months’ additional progress as a result of this type of intensive tutoring programme.
Employees in Birmingham volunteer to help sort clothing and donated items for homeless people at SIFA Fireside. This helps encourage homeless people to access SIFA Fireside for help, which enables the staff to work alongside homeless ‘clients’ as they seek to rebuild their lives.
We are developing volunteering at Birmingham Women’s & Children’s Hospital alongside local young people, as part of our national Helpforce volunteering programme.
We are running a number of volunteering programmes with our partnership school, Bristol Metropolitan Academy, including mentoring, mock interview sessions, and Careers Fair advisors.
Our employees are volunteering alongside secondary students from Bristol Metropolitan Academy as Helpforce volunteers at North Bristol NHS Trust. Volunteers provide companionship and conversation to patients on Care of the Elderly wards. This is part of our national NHS volunteering programme which won an ‘HR in Law’ award in 2019.
We are supporting ‘Feed the Homeless’ in Bristol, taking hot food out to homeless people struggling to survive on the streets of the city.
During the summer holidays, our employees volunteered with Feeding Bristol to provide fun activities and, most importantly, food to deprived, hungry children in response to the growing problem of ‘Holiday Hunger’.
Lawyers in Bristol provide pro bono Employment advice through the Avon & Bristol Law Centre.
We were awarded a TravelWest award for the third year running in recognition of our environmentally-friendly travel policies.
11 employees volunteered to help and inspire 290 schoolchildren in 7 schools in Dublin on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and the world of work, with Junior Achievement Ireland.
Our employees have an ongoing partnership with Inner City Helping Homeless to help Dublin’s homeless people through donated clothing and toiletries and the provision of shop vouchers to buy food.
Last Christmas, our Glasgow office organised a collection of gifts and essentials such as clothing and toiletries for homeless people and sent a team of volunteers to Glasgow City Mission to help sort them into bundles for gifting.
We are also developing a volunteering programme to help tackle loneliness in elderly people through ‘Call in Time’, a weekly telephone befriending scheme set up by Age UK in partnership with Zurich.
Our Glasgow office is planning a Beach Clean in the Spring, to help tackle ocean pollution around the Scottish coastline.

Once a week, a group of employees volunteer with ‘Right to Read’ to help develop the reading skills of children aged 4-7 at Hovingham Primary.
Our employees helped homeless people in Leeds at Christmas by serving a special lunch at St Anne's Day Centre in partnership with local homelessness charity 'Simon on the Streets'.
Employees in our London head office are volunteering to help disadvantaged school students, homeless people, and the elderly.
With the charity Action Tutoring, we are helping students at Sir John Cass & Redcoat Foundation secondary in Tower Hamlets. A team of volunteer tutors meets every week with students who are at risk of not achieving a pass at GCSE English. Designed to help close the attainment gap for poorer students, this intervention has significant measurable impact; 2 terms of Action Tutoring sessions moves the pass rate of participating students from 53% to 70% (the national average is 70.2%).
We also fielded a team of 14 volunteers to help pupils at Winton Primary prepare for their SATs with Action Tutoring. Following a morning of intensive English tutoring, we were delighted to hear that 100% of the pupils we worked with had passed their SATs.
Students from Sir John Cass & Redcoat Foundation secondary are working alongside us as Helpforce volunteers at Hawthorn Green Residential Care Home. We are providing friendship and conversation to the elderly residents there through craft activities, board games and even a trip to the Imperial War Museum to mark Armistice Day. This is part of our national NHS volunteering programme which won an ‘HR in Law’ award in 2019.
Our employees are helping homeless people at The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields. For 4 months during the Autumn, our volunteers participate in the Arts & Craft Workshop on Friday mornings, spending time chatting over art-based activities to provide friendship and conversation to the homeless ‘clients’ who attend. We also help cover the Cold Weather Lunches rota once a week, providing a much-needed hot, nutritious meal to homeless people who go to The Connection for help.
At Christmas, around 60 of our employees take part in our annual volunteering campaign for homeless people. Led by our Senior Partner and members of our Board, volunteers help put up Christmas trees and decorations at The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields and serve Christmas lunch at The Passage.
At Christmas, our employees helped elderly and sick people in poverty situations by donating food and spending time at a home run by The Order of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
In partnership with the charity Young Citizens, a team led by our Location Head delivered a 6-week ‘Legal Experts in Schools’ programme to secondary students at Oasis Academy Salford on the law and how it relates to them. Topics included ‘Social Media and the Law’, ‘Discrimination’ and ‘Youth Justice’.
We are developing a project to tackle loneliness in elderly people with Manchester Cares. Local elderly people will be visiting our Manchester office to enjoy social time chatting to our employees, and to experience a modern business environment which is now very different to the world of work they once knew.
Our people in Manchester are helping homeless people by volunteering at the Booth Centre, organising food donations, serving breakfast and lunch and chatting with homeless ‘clients’ who come to the centre for help. Our employees also help families and children living in poverty situations through Wood Street Mission by organising a collection of gifts at Christmas time, and Family Basics collections at other points during the year.
Each year our employees participate in the Manchester Legal Walk, raising funds for agencies in Manchester and the North West to enable the provision of free legal advice to vulnerable or deprived members of the community.
Our lawyers volunteer alongside law students at the BPP Law Clinic, helping to provide access to legal advice and assistance to local small enterprises.
A group of employees volunteer once a week as Reading Partners to help develop the reading skills of children aged 4-7 at a primary school in Salford.
Our Newcastle office is fielding a team of Helpforce volunteers to help Northumbria NHS Trust in its brand new Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) at The Northumbria Hospital in Cramlington. The DACB volunteers assist the ACU, its staff and patients by talking to patients and making them feel at ease and supported, often with a cup of tea in hand. This is part of our national NHS volunteering programme which won an ‘HR in Law’ award in 2019.

A team is volunteering as Reading Partners at Tredegar Park Primary, helping the children to practise their reading schools once a week.
Our employees are helping homeless people by collecting donated items of clothing and toiletries for The Wallich, which provides a range of services to help turn around the lives of homeless people in South Wales.
