Peter specialises in complex and large loss litigation.

He has over 30 years’ experience advising clients across a range of sectors including motor, casualty, product liability. His key clients include AXA, Ageas, QBE.

Peter looks to take ownership of his cases, enabling him to advise on appropriate tactics, strategy thereby enabling him to agree with the client how best to drive the case to conclusion by contest or a proactively seek a negotiated settlement.  

Relevant experience includes advising:

• Ageas in resolving, by settlement, a domestic accident which resulted in paraplegia in a 24 year old young man. In following the approach outlined above Peter investigated liability at a very early stage and established a robust denial of liability. Then agreeing with the client that disposal of the case was the ultimate aim he commenced settlement discussions. Despite the seriousness of the injuries Peter then negotiated settlement of the action with the Plaintiff’s Senior Counsel in the amount of £300,000.00 inclusive of the claimant’s costs. This very early settlement presented the insurer with certainty, an excellent settlement and costs savings resulting in significant indemnity spend savings.
• Advising AXA in the settlement of a quadriplegic injury. This was ultimately agreed by way of a PPO. The Plaintiff was a German national who was injured in a road traffic accident while on holiday in Northern Ireland. The department of the defendant’s insurer dealing with this matter was based in Europe and therefore although the settlement was negotiated in Belfast, and the lump sum aspect was paid in sterling, we agreed the PPO terms in Euros which presents the client with on-going annual savings in exchange rates.
• Peter is representing AXA insurance in the defence of a product liability case. The insured manufactured a glue used in the furniture business. Some of the furniture manufactured by the plaintiff company delaminated. The ensuing litigation required many scientists to be retained and to give evidence of a highly technical nature. The trial judge favoured a “hot-tubbing” approach, whereby the opposing scientists gave evidence at the same time. Peter prepared the defence expert for this process. This long standing litigation has had a High Court decision at first instance and been appealed through the Court of Appeal and the quantum aspect now remains to be resolved.
