John is head of DAC Beachcroft LLP’s Corporate Tax Department. He specialises in the field of commercial tax generally, arising on all commercial and corporate transactions and advising on all aspects of corporation tax, income tax, NIC, capital allowances, capital gains tax, VAT, stamp duty and stamp duty land tax. John regularly advises on the tax aspects of all types of commercial agreements and merger & acquisitions, focusing on tax minimisation and the allocation of risk.
John spends a huge part of his life dealing with share schemes of all types. The EMI is the best game in town and John is passionate about helping clients use these to save huge amounts of tax. More and more clients are being drawn to the new Employee Ownership Trust as a genuine alternative to Private Equity.
Recent property-related work includes advising on the different types of joint venture vehicle, be they tax transparent or otherwise, SDLT and VAT structuring, and inward property investment.
John acts for both the public and private sector, and is currently using his experience of the roll out of IR35 to the public sector to guide private sector clients as to what they can expect in April 2020.
John was recently involved with creating and providing VAT advice on what we understand is the largest Cost Sharing Group in the UK taking advantage of the newly introduced exemption for VAT.
John is also a noted practitioner in Chambers.
"DACB led our response to an investigation with HMRC into the self-employed status covering a significant part of our workforce. They brought significant experience to both the subject matter and the investigation process itself and managed our activities in a way that enabled us to be well prepared and briefed at all times. Of note was the way they maintained the pressure on all parties to drive the investigation to a ‘speedy’ satisfactory conclusion." Nick Gordon, Medvivo
"John (Dunlop) was invaluable in assisting the Trust address a complex issue with HMRC. The Trust was presented with an unexpected potential liability from HMRC, and John led us through the thorny issues with which we were dealing. He took us through the process and made it easy for us to deal with. He asked pertinent questions both of the organisation and HMRC. With the result that the outcome for us could not have been better. Thoroughly recommended!" Dean Wilson, HR Director, Sheffield Health & Social Care NHS FT
