Johanna Lipponen

Johanna is a Solicitor sitting in DAC Beachcroft’s Information Law team, specialising in data protection and commercial law matters, with particular expertise in consumer rights issues.

She qualified in September 2021 and joined DAC Beachcroft in March 2022. Johanna has experience advising clients across a range of sectors, including insurance, financial services, and retail fashion and marketing communications agencies in her previous role.

Johanna currently provides a wide range of data protection advice to a variety of clients but with a focus on the insurance sector. This includes advising on clients’ internal and external data protection compliance documentation such as privacy notices, data protection policies, playbooks, data processing, sharing and transfer agreements (both intra-group and external), assisting with data protection impact assessments and transfer impact/risk assessments. Johanna also is experienced with providing client training on data protection topics such as international data transfers, dealing with subject access requests, reviewing and advising on the data protection elements of commercial contracts and providing guidance on the data protection implications of new insurance product propositions. She also assists our Corporate team with data protection related matters, such as conducting due diligence.

As part of her commercial practice, Johanna has notable experience in particular with advising on a variety of IT services agreements, and she regularly advises clients on matters such as software licensing and distribution agreements, software-as-a-service agreements, end-user licence agreements and service level agreements. She also advises on general commercial agreements such as framework services agreements, terms and conditions of the sale of goods/supply of services, events contracts (such as sponsorship agreements and broadcasting/streaming agreements) as well as compliance with marketing rules in relation to prize draws, competitions and promotions.

Johanna has significant experience advising on the application of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 in relation to consumer facing contracts and communications, including advising clients wishing to become retailers as part of a new business or product proposition on their compliance obligations for client-facing terms and conditions and website copy, including consumers’ rights to cancel and return products.

Prior to joining DAC Beachcroft, Johanna worked mainly with fashion and footwear retail brands, providing them with broad commercial legal advice on intellectual property matters (trademarks and copyright), IT, data protection, marketing and advertising compliance, consumer rights matters and distribution and licensing arrangements.
