Colin Bissett has an extensive background in litigation having begun his career in general criminal defence work before going on to specialising in regulatory matters. He has experience of appearing as counsel in a variety of health and safety and environmental prosecutions, complex fraud cases, road traffic prosecutions involving life-changing injuries and fatalities and fatal accident inquiries (including a large-scale, long running FAI relating to the death in a fire of 14 residents of a care home).
Colin regularly advises organisations on policy development in response to constantly evolving schemes of regulation which affect public and private sector clients. He advises international industrial and manufacturing businesses on health and safety and environmental matters with Scotland. Colin provides specialist advice in the immediate aftermath of an incident, ensuring the protection of clients' interests from the outset of any investigations by prosecuting authorities.
His wide-ranging experience in defending regulatory prosecutions is supported by a thorough grasp of police and criminal court procedure.
He is a member of the Health and Safety Lawyers Association and a speaker at conferences on the subject of health and safety. He has also contributed articles to publications on health and safety, food safety, law reform and court practice.
