Energy storage technology is developing at a remarkable rate and looks likely to be a key component of the UK's electricity supply infrastructure in the near future. The delivery of this technology poses challenges for the planning system as the precise consenting route and associated guidance is unclear.

In this note we explore the possible planning pitfalls for energy storage schemes and particularly how the Development Consent Order regime could affect large-scale and co-located energy storage schemes. We also consider the reform proposals emerging from Government in this area.
