National Minimum Wage

Published On: 15 April 2016

The following hourly rates of national minimum wage will apply from 1 October 2016:

  • The rate for workers aged 21 to 24: Up 3.7% to £6.95
  • The development rate (workers aged 18 to 20): Up 4.7% to £5.55
  • The young workers rate (non-apprentices aged under 18, but above compulsory school age): Up 3.4% to £4.00
  • The apprenticeship rate: Up 3% to £3.40

The new national living wage of £7.20 an hour for workers aged 25 and over, which comes into force in April 2016, will not change on 1 October 2016.

The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills has issued a new booklet on Calculating the National Minimum Wage which employers may find useful. It covers how to calculate the minimum wage, what counts as pay, what hours need to be counted, and how to enforce the national minimum wage.
