Employment Newsletter - July 2015
Published 14 July 2015
While we might not have much on the topic of discrimination in this newsletter, the most up to date summary of awards for discrimination has just been published. Despite the introduction of tribunal fees discrimination claims are not going away.
The same number of awards were made in 2014 as in 2013. The worrying statistic is that in 2014 there was a 77% increase on the amount awarded in 2013: employers paid out £7.5 million. The highest compensatory awards for sex, disability and race discrimination attracted six figure sums of approximately £556,000, £258,000 and £209,000 respectively. This reflects what we've seen in practice: that since tribunal fees have been introduced discrimination claims that fight are more complex and higher risk.
