On 1 December 2014, new immigration requirements were introduced for landlords who let private accommodation to new tenants, with the aim of preventing illegal immigrants settling in the UK.
Under the new requirements, landlords must not allow a person to rent a property in the UK as their only or main home, unless that person is a British citizen, EEA or Swiss national or has the right to rent in the UK (meaning that they must be in the UK lawfully).
