South Korea: Guidelines on data protection for big data released

The South Korean Communications Commission has released guidelines covering data protection in relation to ‘big data’ (Guidelines). The Guidelines are aimed at ‘Information and Communications Services Providers’ and seek to protect personal information present in ‘publicly available information’.
The Guidelines include:
- A requirement to anonymise any personal data in publicly available information before it is exploited or used to create new information;
- A duty to disclose big data processing activities and policies; and
- A prohibition on the processing of sensitive personal data.
