Planning and Environment

We advise on a complete range of contentious and non-contentious planning, highways administrative law and local government matters, many of which are high profile and of national significance.

We have particular expertise in the following areas:

  • Major residential, commercial and retail-led mixed use development, many of which are regeneration projects. We are involved in some of the most difficult and complex housing schemes in the country.
  • Major infrastructure projects such as HS2 and Crossrail 1/Crossrail 2.
  • Compulsory purchase powers, appropriation and related compensation claims in the Lands Chamber.
  • Drafting and negotiation of complex Section 106 Agreements for residential and mixed use developments, viability appraisals and the provision of affordable housing.
  • Related areas of planning law such as enforcement, use classes, permitted development rights, heritage assets and the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL).
  • Acting on statutory challenges and judicial review proceedings up to the Supreme Court. We also have extensive experience of the use of Parliamentary process to secure powers for, as well as the promotion of National Policy Statements, Development Consent Orders and Transport and Works Act Orders.
  • We are involved in garden towns and garden villages, recently helping a district council secure “garden town” status, with subsequent legal framework advice.
  • Environmental compliance, including permitting, waste, emissions and pollution.
  • The application of the Environmental Damage Regulations.
  • Water theft – we worked on the first ever case.
