Approved Clinician Induction Training

Our course is approved by the North of England Approvals Panel (NEAP) as an Induction course for all those seeking Approved Clinician (AC) status.

Programme Information 2018 - 2019

Programme

The programme will provide the necessary introduction and refresher to the key provisions of the Mental Health Act (MHA) and its Code of Practice, which an AC needs to be familiar with. An overview of the treatment provisions, the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) interface in the context of the AC role and the legal responsibilities of the AC/Responsible Clinician (RC) role will be addressed, together with any key developments and 'hot topics'. The roles of different professionals will be discussed, with issues raised from an AMHP perspective and a service user/carer perspective.

The focus throughout will be on the practical application and impact of the legal issues for ACs.

The two days will comprise of an interactive mix of presentations, case studies, quizzes and practical exercises.

All participants will be invited to identify issues they wish to cover and to raise questions, case examples and points for discussion throughout the day.

Comprehensive materials will be provided for delegates to refer to and to supplement the topics on the day.

Facilitators

The day will be jointly facilitated throughout by Helen Kingston, a solicitor and consultant with DAC Beachcroft (and former principal lecturer at Northumbria University) and Dr Gill Bell (Mental Health Act Clinical Lead, Northumberland Tyne & Wear NHSFT), both of whom have extensive experience in providing AC/s.12 training. Helen and Gill will be joined by other members of our multi-professional training team.
