Chris Syder, partner at international law firm Davies Arnold Cooper, has been appointed the next Employers spokesman in the United Nations' International Labour Organisation's (ILO) Committee on the Application of Labour Standards.
The ILO is the international organisation responsible for drawing up and overseeing international labour standards. International labour standards are backed by a supervisory system that helps to ensure that countries implement the ILO conventions they ratify. The Committee on the Application of Labour Standards is one of the principal pillars of the ILO supervisory system, as the tripartite body in which Employers participate on an equal footing with governments and workers (trade unions) in making a technical and political assessment of the application of ILO labour standards. The Conference Committee is frequently used as a platform to denounce alleged abuses and criticize unsatisfactory national laws and policies.
Chris is succeeding the US employer spokesperson, Ed Potter. Ed is the Director for Global Workplace Rights at the Coca-Cola Company. Chris undertakes a unique international role for UK employers through his work on behalf of the CBI. He is the CBI’s Governing Body representative at the ILO, as well as being the CBI’s Management Board representative at the International Organisation of Employers (IOE). Consequently, he works closely with national and international trade unions. Jim Bligh, head of employee relations & pensions at the CBI, said:
“We are delighted that Chris has been appointed as Employer spokesman of the ILO’s Application of Labour Standards Committee. The committee is tasked with upholding labour standards across the world – a field in which British business is justly proud. This is a prestigious position and one that Chris thoroughly deserves - he has done some fantastic work on behalf of British business at the ILO's international labour conference over recent years and we wish him every success in the position.”
Chris commented: "I am honoured to be appointed the next spokesman to represent Employers in the Committee on the Application of Labour Standards. Employers face many challenges as a result of globalisation and the global financial crisis. I look forward to working with governments and workers to promote a consistent, equitable and relevant application of international labour standards."
