David Redford-Crowe - DAC Beachcroft

David Redford-Crowe

David is a Real Estate lawyer in our Leeds office who acts for telecommunications companies.

His experience includes advising on complex network infrastructure arrangements such as Enabling Agreements, Framework Agreements and Multi-Site Agreements with other mobile network operators, public sector bodies, utility companies and wholesale infrastructure providers. He has particular expertise in relation to the Electronic Communications Code (more commonly referred to as Code Powers) upon which he advised extensively over many years whilst he was based In-House with one of the world’s leading mobile network operators, Orange (now part of EE). This covered high-level strategic advice upon preserving network integrity, working closely with Ofcom (and its predecessor, Oftel) on various regulatory issues as well as serving Code Powers in relation to individual sites deemed critical to the network.

David was the sole author of a detailed Handbook on the law, policy and procedure for exercising Code Powers which became the definitive reference guide for other members of the In-House Legal Department and which earned him the unofficial accolade of Code Powers guru from his peers. He was also the lead solicitor in successfully resisting a novel Court of Appeal challenge concerning the use of Code Powers in a planning law context. Over the years he has also contributed to a number of key statutory consultations affecting the telecoms industry most recently in the context of the reform of the Code itself.

David qualified in 1993 and joined DAC Beachcroft in 2014 after having chosen to take a short career break to pursue other interests including travelling and undertaking charitable work. He has spent most of his practising career working in an In-House environment after having initially training at Nabarro Nathanson (now known as Nabarro) in London with whom he stayed for a number of years upon qualification. Apart from having been a Senior Legal Adviser for Orange, his previous other senior legal roles have included General Counsel for Ananova (a cutting-edge news and information service) and General Counsel for UKFast, one of the UK’s leading web hosting companies. Aside from having acquired a comprehensive understanding of the telecoms industry, David has also worked in various other sectors (biotechnology, coal and cloud computing) as well as in the public sector (higher education and local government), across a number of other legal jurisdictions (Scotland, Northern Ireland, Denmark, Sweden and the United States), undertaken funded research projects and delivered lectures on a variety of legal topics all of which together bring a breadth and depth to the delivery of his legal advice which is both commercially-astute and pragmatic.
