Although this has traditionally been the preserve of prospective barristers, with the increasing advocacy involved within commercial litigation, it is an exercise which all law students will find useful and of lasting benefit. Beachcroft therefore initiated the Mooting Shield in October 2009. The 2011 competition final was won by a joint team from the College of Law and the University of York.
The DAC Beachcroft Mooting Shield is based on a group league format, with universities throughout Yorkshire, Manchester and the North-East competing against each other, followed by semi-finals and a grand final. Moots take place on average every three weeks, with all the administration and organisation undertaken by DAC Beachcroft. Moots are judged by lawyers from both DAC Beachcroft and established barristers' chambers throughout the region. The issues debated during the moots are based on those areas of law in which we specialise, giving students an excellent opportunity to develop advocacy skills and increase their confidence by presenting their cases to experts in that field.
As well as receiving the prestigious DAC Beachcroft Mooting Shield, the winning team of students also receive a week's work placement at the firm. A further prize is awarded for the best overall advocate. If you have any questions about the DAC Beachcroft Mooting Shield please email mooting@dacbeachcroft.com.
