Despite already having a carbon footprint lower than most service-based companies, we have pledged to reduce our carbon usage by a further 5% through energy saving, waste saving and flexible working initiatives.
From March 2006 to April 2007, our carbon footprint was equivalent to 4,526 tonnes of CO2, which equates to 3.4 tonnes of CO2 per employee. The average for service-based companies is between three to five tonnes, increasing to eight tonnes for companies that travel frequently by air. With the help of Enviros, we have just completed a second audit into our carbon footprint. The results of the audit show that our overall electricity consumption, which is the largest contributor to the footprint, has reduced by over 20%.
To further lessen our footprint, we have has set up an environmental committee, led by the firm’s Senior Partner Simon Hodson, and assisted by other partners within firm. Champions in each office have been appointed to ensure an ongoing commitment to a reduction in energy consumption and waste production. We have also introduced a ‘green matters’ intranet site that provides links and information to staff on how they can reduce waste and be more energy efficient both at home and in the work place.
The measures we have introduced are indicative of a firm-wide commitment to reducing DAC Beachcroft's impact on the environment. Ultimately, they are a key step towards making the business environmentally sustainable for the future. Our staff can play a significant part in helping DAC Beachcroft become more environmentally responsible.
Some of the key measures being introduced include working with the IT departments to automatically switch off idle PCs and monitors after 7pm and encouraging staff to make the most of our newly upgraded video conferencing facilities. Similarly, as commuting accounts for 14% of the firm's carbon footprint and is the second largest contributor, further flexible working initiatives will be introduced in order to reduce the need for staff to commute to work.
We have also started working closely with our suppliers to ensure that they are as committed as the firm on environmental issues. Typical areas are with taxis, deliveries, couriers, stationery, office supplies, catering and vending.
DAC Beachcroft joined the Legal Sector Alliance in January 2009. The LSA currently represents around 20% of solicitors in private practice in England and Wales and includes firms of all sizes from global practices to sole practitioners.
The Legal Sector Alliance has been developed to support the whole of the profession in the necessary move towards a low carbon economy and, more crucially than ever, to run sustainable and efficient businesses.
